The Hidden Health Risks of Dirty Carpets

Is your carpet contributing to your ill health?

It’s undeniable that a clean environment promotes health and wellbeing and that our homes are the one place we can keep spotless, from top to bottom.

Fostering a healthy, clean home can take a lot of hard work and dedication; certain areas of the house may often get overlooked, such as the carpets!

Carpets may appear to look clean on the surface, but lurking underneath and within the deep pile are a whole host of microbes, bacteria, and other potential irritants that can affect your health.

How can a dirty carpet affect mine or my family’s health?

In general, carpets do a great job of acting as a filter, cleaning the air and trapping pollutants that can be damaging to us. From pollen and bacteria to cigarette smoke and residues, your carpet will collect it all.

The problems start when the fibres become full and can no longer filter the air, allowing these harmful pollutants to circulate in your environment.

When carpets become overwhelmed by dirt and toxins, existing health conditions can become worsened and new health conditions can suddenly arise.

Allergies, respiratory Issues, skin irritations, weakened immune systems, stomach illnesses, and mental health issues can all be exacerbated or brought on through the failure to regularly clean carpets.

But I hoover every day, surely my carpets are clean?

Over time your carpet will collect dirt, dust, old skin, pet hair, and mold. Hoovering can help to remove some of these particles, but it also frees them up to spread throughout your home.

This dispersion can cause irritation and coughing, leading to respiratory issues or the increase in symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma. Furthermore, these same particles can trigger allergic reactions which can flare up in the immediate hours after hoovering.

Dust mites like to bury themselves deep in the pile – when we walk or young children play on a carpet that isn’t cleaned regularly, it can cause skin irritations and allergic reactions. The trapped pollutants and dirt in your carpet can only be removed by regular professional cleaning!

The benefits of regular professional carpet cleaning

Do you have pets or young children? Does your home get a lot of traffic or are you taking care of someone that’s sick and infirm? Whatever your personal situation, there are many contributing factors that can mean a dirty carpet is affecting your health and your environment, putting you and your loved ones at risk.

Hoovering alone will not solve the problem. Do you wish to ensure that your carpets are truly clean and not playing host to damaging toxins and pollutants that can cause harm?

Then it’s recommended to have them professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months to protect you and your family from harmful bacteria and potential allergens.
